The Ethical Jewelry Guide

"Ethical jewelry" gets used as a slogan. This page is the substance: what the real issues are, what the safeguards actually guarantee, and the questions worth asking anyone who sells you a stone — including us.

The issues, honestly stated

Jewelry's supply chains raise three concerns: conflict financing (gems funding armed groups), labour conditions (unsafe mining and cutting work), and environmental impact (land disturbance, water use, emissions). No single certificate resolves all three; honest sellers say which safeguards address which risk.

What the safeguards cover

  • The Kimberley Process certifies rough diamonds as conflict-free in the narrow sense — not funding rebel movements. It says nothing about labour conditions or environment, which is why diligence can't stop there.
  • Chain-of-custody programs (e.g. supplier audits, mine-to-market tracing) go further, following a stone through cutting and trading houses.
  • Lab-grown origin replaces the question "which mine, which route?" with a named growing facility — the shortest possible supply chain, though growing still uses energy (ask about the facility's power source).
  • Recycled precious metals re-refine existing gold rather than driving new extraction; refiner certification is the document to ask for.

Questions to ask any jeweller

  1. Where was this stone grown or mined, and how do you know?
  2. Is the metal newly mined or re-refined — and can you show the refiner's certification?
  3. Who graded the stone, and is the report independent of the seller?
  4. Which claims on your site are certified, and which are aspirations?

Where Ghavelli stands

Today our centre stones are lab-grown diamonds and moissanite from named growing partners, independently graded. Our gold is sourced as recycled — refiner documentation is being finalised for publication. As natural diamonds join the collection, they will come only from suppliers who can evidence Kimberley Process compliance and chain-of-custody beyond it; we will publish the specifics, not adjectives. The full commitments live in our sustainability promise.
